There is a great pictorial example of our sin nature to be found in Easter candy Peeps.
Mankind has a great propensity to sin, but after we come to Christ He gives us a new nature.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
The only problem is the old nature still exists. It becomes that which we struggle against to please God. We must choose to wake up every day and slay our old nature and live according to the new nature God has given us.
Luke 9:23 "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
In order to successfully win this struggle we must continually immerse ourselves in Gods word and prayer, and surround ourselves with other people who will hold us accountable in our walk with Christ. Other wise we grow distant, then weak… then we fall.
I heard someone tell a great analogy of why we are to remain around Gods people and in the church.
A young man went camping with his grandfather and eventually the discussion of God and church came up. He was bragging to his grandfather about how strong he was as a Christian, but he just didn’t see the reason why we should go to church. The young man kept on espousing his reasons for not going to church… and his grandfather never said a word. But while the young man was talking he walked over to the campfire and pulled out one of the big logs that was burning brightly. The young man continued on and on, all the while the log that was once burning brightly began to grow dim and then eventually went out. The old man never said a word; he just looked at the dead log and then his grandson. After a few silent moments the grandson sheepishly smiled up at his grandfather and said; “I get your point”.
Easter candy peeps are darn near indestructible. You can stomp on them, run them over with the car and just about anything else, and eventually if left alone they will reshape themselves back into a Peep. Our sin nature is like the Peeps. Unless constant pressure is maintained to shape it into what God desires it will always revert back to its natural shape…
DEAD!
